Ronald Phillip Artacho, age 77, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2019 at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital due to an unexpected illness. Ron is survived by his daughter, Erika Benamati, through his previous marriage to Rosalba Artacho; his fiancé, Zonda Hyman-Whitten; and his five grandchildren, Juliana Fisher, Kenzie Benamati, Natalie Benamati, Michael Linarez Jr., and Charlie “Charletta” Thompson. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Regina Artacho.
Ron, or “Coach” as he was affectionately known as, was born on November 24, 1941 in San Leandro, California. He worked for 39 years with Alameda County, 23 of those years were spent with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department as a Recreation Director.
To say Ron was a baseball enthusiast would be an understatement. His love of baseball started as a child at the age of 16 while being scouted by the Cincinnati Reds. After collapsing on the baseball field and getting a life changing diagnosis that he would no longer be able to play baseball, he was devastated. After a long talk with his father, who understood his disappointment about his baseball career, he said “Go out and teach what you know!” Hence the reason Ron was a coach for over 50 years as well as a referee for basketball. Ron taught many young men and women his love and knowledge of these two sports but especially BASEBALL! His smile, positive outlook and zest for life will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 163 West Eaton Avenue in Tracy California. A Celebration of Life will follow the services and the location will be announced at the service.
