Raymond W. Shupe, loving husband and father, passed away quietly on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at the age of 92. Born to Claude and Fern Shupe on June 9th, 1927 in Kensal North Dakota, he moved to Tracy at age 9 and lived there on and off until his death.
Raymond is survived by his wife Helga of 62 years, his son Lesley (Sylvia), sisters… Claudia (Mario D.), Dorothy (Albert), Mae (Alen) and brother Dale, as well as many nieces and nephews.
At 17, Raymond joined the Merchant Marines and carried supplies to far off ports such as Calcutta India, Hobart Tasmania, Japan, Bahrain, Guam, Tenia, Korea and Columbo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). After 4 years in the Merchant Marines, he was drafted into the Army on December 3rd, 1952 where he served for 24 years. During that time he served 2 tours in Vietnam and one in Korea. He lived in several countries including Germany and France. Upon his discharge from the Army, he worked for the DVI (prison) in Tracy. After a brief time there he and Helga went into business together and opened Helga’s Kitchen for 11 years. Later he went to work for the Tracy Orchard Restaurant, where he worked for 21 years. Eventually, he fully retired at the age of 83.
Raymond was and avid snow skier, bowler, fisherman, hunter, R/C pilot and a terrific baker. He also loved animals and owned several dogs and blue and gold macaws.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 25th, 2019 at Fry Memorial Chapel at 550 S Central Ave, Tracy. There will be a viewing from 9am to 11am, with the service starting at 11am, also at Fry Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St.Jude.
