Gene Alden Moore, 85, a longtime Tracy resident who had worked in the grocery business for many years. He died in his sleep Thursday, July 9, at his home in Tracy.
Gene was born in Waynoka, Oklahoma, and came to Tracy as a child. He attended Central School and Senior Elementary School and was a Class of 1953 graduate of Tracy High School, where he played the clarinet in the Tracy High marching band.
Starting in 1957, he served in the U.S. Army as a medical corpsman and medical specialist stationed at a Nike Ajax missile base in the Bay Area until he was honorably discharged in 1959.
On Nov. 1, 1959, Gene married Arlene Marie Castodio at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. They had both attended Tracy High, and she worked next door at the Grand Theatre while he worked at West Side Market.
Gene retired from the grocery business. He worked at Purity and West Side markets, managed the Mayfair Market, and then worked as a head clerk at Safeway until his retirement in 1997.
He liked to fish, was a league bowler at the Tracy Bowl, and was an avid golfer at courses in Tracy and Manteca.
In 1981, he joined the Tracy Skyliners Radio Control Club. He served as the club’s treasurer for several years and enjoyed building and flying model airplanes.
He enjoyed attending air shows, visiting military museums, and watching San Francisco Giants baseball games.
Gene is survived by a son, Glenn Moore, and his wife, Jenni Payton Moore, of Tracy; and a granddaughter, Mikayla Payton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Moore, in 2013; a son, Gene Moore, in 2014; his parents, Clyde and Myrtle Moore; and his brothers, Donald Moore and George Moore.
Due to covid-19 restrictions Gene’s Celebration of Life & graveside services will reserved for immediately family only. His service will also be livestreamed beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2020 via Gene’s tribute page at www.frymemorialchapel.com. Visitation will be observed prior and is open to all friends & family from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 South Central Avenue.
